Life in New Zealand

A. Working and living in New Zealand

New Zealand has long welcomed migrants for the skills, capital and new ideas they bring. As a nation it is culturally diverse, dynamic and, outward looking.

Tourists and adventure-seekers have long been attracted to New Zealand’s warm hospitality and pristine environment, but it can also offer challenging careers to go with its fantastic lifestyle.

New Zealand offers sophisticated urban living, with fine restaurants and a vibrant arts scene. The 2007 Mercer Global Quality of Life survey confirmed Auckland and Wellington as the 5th and 12th best cities in the world to live in.

New Zealand’s unique blend of cultures, youthful history and geography has shaped an open and inclusive society, with a progressive, global outlook.

If you get to New Zealand you can look forward to a great lifestyle and a bright future.

B. Health

There are good health and disability services in New Zealand, including doctors, pharmacies and hospitals.

As someone living in New Zealand you will always be able to use those services when you need to.

For work permit holders to be eligible for publicly funded health and disability services, you must be lawfully in New Zealand and be holder of a work permit:

·        that is issued for a period of two years or more

·        that allows you to remain in New Zealand for a period of time that,   when added together with the time you've already been lawfully in New Zealand, amounts to two consecutive years or more (eg, people who have had their work permit renewed).

C. Housing

Finding somewhere to live will be one of your highest priorities when you first arrive in New Zealand. Lots of people choose to rent a house first and then buy later. It gives you a chance to become familiar with the city or region you’ll be living in before you buy. You can take some time to discover the types of housing we have and what it costs. And you can find out how to buy a house in New Zealand – it might be different from the process in your home country.

D. Transport

New Zealand has a well-maintained road network and the main islands are linked by ferry and air services. If you have a current overseas driver's licence or international driving permit, you can drive using that for a maximum of 12 months from the date you arrive in New Zealand. (Note: if your overseas licence or permit isn't in English, you must carry an accurate translation)

E. Tax

Any person, individual or business who is required to pay tax in New Zealand will be allocated an IRD number when they apply to Inland Revenue. You will need an IRD number before you start a job, or if you want to open a bank account.

If your income is from salary, wages or a social security benefit, your tax will be deducted under the pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) system. This means the pay you get in your hand has already had tax deducted.

The New Zealand tax rates are:

  • 19.5 cents in every dollar for income up to $38,000
  • 33 cents in every dollar for income from $38,001 to $60,000
  • 39 cents in every dollar for income of $60,001 or above
